1st XV Back to Winning Ways!

By

Warminster were back to winning ways on Saturday when they defeated Calne at fortress Folly.

In a squad that featured 15 (out of 18) graduates from our youth section. The game started with the visitors having the upper hand regaining their kick off and asserting vast amounts of pressure on the home sides defence. After a weathering the storm with some great defensive work, Warminster managed to forces a mistake from the visitors attack and fly half Jimmy Rees was able to quickly put the ball through the hands of the backs until it got to winger Dan Harris who’s hands must of been cold as he dropped the simple catch. The resulting scrum saw a fantastic push from the visitors to provide a great platform. The rest of the half saw Calne use their set piece very well to cause the home-side many a problem. Calne missed a shot a goal with a penalty. So it was The amber and blues struck first with centre Dan McIntyre scoring after a fumbled ball was picked up well and passed out to McIntyre to burst through a gap and broke a covering tackle to score under the posts. Full back Jason Sprangle slotted the extras. Warminster with ball in hand began to look dangerous and created a few chances but the final pass in a few occasions was deemed forward or just didn’t come off. Calne were still fighting back using the large pack to rumble down the pitch. Skipper Stephen Rowbotham and hooker Alex Jenkins were up the defensive challenge with strong tackles. The defensive line was quick up to pressure the the Calne attack. This resulted in a cross field kick which found winger Tom Evans, who was able to use his pace to rush in from half away evading back pedalling defenders. McIntyre was able to score his second before the half was ended to take the score to 21-0 at the whistle.

After a few changes and some words from head coach Mosi. The amber and blues were raring go. Unfortunately the next score was from the visitors as a break from Calne saw an over lap on the touchline, try scorer Evans rushing across tackled his opposite number to push the attack out into touch. Unfortunately the tackle was high and a penalty try was awarded. Evans was shown yellow and a 10 minute rest for his efforts. Lachlan Stuart was brought on at fly half along with James Payne on the wing. Stuart made an instant impact with some strong tackles. Calne began to put pressure on the hosts. But strong defending keeping the visitors at bay whilst Evans was in the bin. Warminster began to get hands on the ball and made the tiring Calne defence pay Sam Couch getting good ball from Stuart, Couch spotting a gap, pulled off a great dummy and was through the gap to score! Payne was also on the score sheet after some quick ball found its way out to the winger who was able to sprint clear from the defence from his own half to the cheers of ‘run forest’! Calne had the last say as their scrum half was able score an individual try! Sprangle was 100% from the boot today converting all 5 of the tries to make the final score 35-12. The result was a good one for Warminster as it was the first win of November for the amber and blues. ‘It was great to see the vast improvements in defensive, which has been our downfall over the last week’ stated Rees. ‘We can seem to score points and click in arrack but our defence has been a real weakness for us so far!’ Coach Mosi commented. In other good news for the amber and blues it was great to see Connor McPherson making a return after a while off. James Rowbotham put in another hard hitting performance in defence. Dom Davey continues to impress, his tireless work especially at the breakdowns slowed a lot of Calne’s ball. Davey has also been called up to the U18s county squad. Skipper Steve Rowbotham was awarded man of the match for his fantastic defensive performance!!
